2012 Kennedy Heathcote Sangiovese

Heathcote Sangiovese?  I have to admit I wasn’t quite sure what to expect not having had many, if any that I can remember.

From young vines this is very approachable, and probably at its best right now but that doesn’t take away from the fact it has plenty of flavour, is light on it’s feet and has a bit of length to it thanks to some smooth tannins.

How cool is it that I can you find a slightly aged Sangiovese, at such a great price, that ticks box after box after box (for this punter anyway)!  Yep, you can find this one on the Kennedy website and it is their current, I repeat, current release.

2015 Stargazer Tasmania Chardonnay

I hear and read so often about how Chardonnay is making a ‘comeback’.  I don’t agree with this statement.  It has always been around (it’s the most widely planted white grape in the country) but it copped a bit of flack for a while because of how it was being made.  I would prefer to say that Chardonnay has been refurbished or reinvented if you like.  Here is a Chardonnay that is certainly making a contribution.

There is so much to like about this wine that it doesn’t seem right to single out any particular characters.  You will know it’s a Chardonnay there’s no doubt about that but it seems to have it’s own personality without being different.  It’s intriguing to the point where you keep sipping it and drinking it because there is so much to find out about this wine.

Grab a novel by your favourite author and a bottle of this.  You’ll soon find yourself wondering which one you are trying to read and which one has your attention.

2014 Summerfield Merlot

Plenty of things have surprised me of late.  I could go on a bit about them but I can’t help but mention how surprised I was about this merlot.  Maybe that’s a bit unfair I don’t know but, to be honest, it came down to not having tried Summerfield wines before and a merlot from an untried producer.  I was oh so pleasantly surprised, enamoured and impressed all at the same time with this one.

The colour is incredible!  It’s as dark as the label on the bottle.  Youthful, dark fruit and plummy aromatics that seep onto your tongue which by now is salivating in anticipation. It’s dark fruity, it’s savoury, it’s a little woody, it’s a little dry but by bloody oath it’s good! Don’t bother looking for tannins or alcohol (13.1%!). Use your time productively and find where you can get your hands on some of this.

Thanks heaps to our good friends Bob & Karen for the gift and introducing me to this label.

2015 Sew & Sew Adelaide Hills Syrah

Those who have been to our home know we have an excellent view of the River Derwent, Mount Wellington, Hobart and its surrounds.  There has been suggestions that it must be easy to take for granted having ‘it’ there every day.  Far from it.  We know that every day it may well change thanks to the suns position, the cloud cover or the time of day.

Same could be said for Adelaide Hills shiraz or syrah.  When people taste one of these wines there is a certain landscape they have become used to and come to expect.  Take for granted if you like.  There’ll be elegance, not power.  There’ll be red and dark cherry fruit flavours, not darkish fruit and a hint of pepper and spice.

Well, prepared to be surprised with this one.

This little gem has all the characteristics of a flavoursome, elegant, silky Adelaide Hills Syrah but with the added nuances of savouriness, quite rich (not overpoweringly so) mid palate plumminess.  Apparently there was oak used, old admittedly but it rides along perfectly with everything else this wine has to offers up.  Even the tannins seem very happy in this environment.  Balanced.  That’s the word, balanced.  Another word I’d use is impressive.  A word it deserves.

2015 Yalumba Eden Valley Rousanne

For various reasons in the current political climate in Australia, people are moving away from the main stream parties and putting their support behind alternative groups and/or individuals.  As much as we realise the bigger parties are the ones to do the job, the minor players are having an influence on the overall landscape.

Rousanne is proving to be one of those minor players in the world of wine varieties.  It is having lots to say, gaining plenty of support and making the big guys stand up and take notice.

Everything about this wine is subtle without trying to be so.  The nose, for starters, seems a bit shy but with a bloody good swirl out comes a floral scented oil character I really enjoyed.  Pretty similar on tasting it too, then pears come into the mix and a creamy texture that had me going back for more…and more!

What a lovely wine this is!

2015 Holm Oak Ilex Sauvignon Blanc

It’s no secret that I am not a fan of Sauvignon Blanc (commonly referred to as SB).  I have tasted some that have changed my opinion in the short term but they have been few and far between.  I much prefer the styles that have been carefully wrapped in a large cask of oak.

This one?  Well, it hasn’t helped my opinion on SB.  Grassy.  No surprises there.  Italian herbs.  A pleasant surprise on the nose.

When I tasted it freshly opened, unfortunately those grassy herbal flavours were drowned by a quite sour note and really tight acid making it unpleasant to drink. Admittedly, I tried it again a couple of days later and, thankfully the sour note had all but disappeared but it didn’t help much.  It was varietal but one dimensional.

This was not a wine for my taste but I’ve no doubt it will appeal to hard-nosed SB drinkers…and good luck to them.

Bec and Tim Duffy make great wine so I’m not quite sure what happened with this one. Dud bottle maybe?

2015 Holm Oak Pinot Noir

It used to be, when we would go out for a meal, I would select a wine brand off the list that I was familiar with.  These days, I prefer a pinot noir and Tasmanian at that because I know it will be good.  On this particular occasion, we took an interstate visitor out for dinner and he chose this one because, in his words, “you can’t go wrong with Tassie pinot”.

It’s quite a lovely, deep colour for the variety and it looks beautiful (strange but true). Thanks to an aromatic, red/dark fruit nose you’re virtually invited to taste it without an RSVP required.  Initially the flavours were a bit all over the place for me but, after some time in the glass, those red/black fruits and cherries and soft tannins and smooth texture all came together to form a very nice wine that leans toward the richer end of the pinot spectrum.

2015 Sew and Sew Sashiko Series Shiraz

This wine taught me a lesson.  Just because a wine is $25 a bottle don’t assume it is a quaffer or a wine to have on a Saturday night with pizza.

Firstly, let me say, I had been drinking Pinot Noir all week and I thought this would be the perfect segway into a more gutsy shiraz.  Well, it’s not quite a gutsy shiraz but it sits pretty close to it and a fair way away from a pinot noir.

Lovely red fruits on the nose, cherries mainly, but a deft touch of black pepper says cool-ish climate shiraz.  The palate is where it screams “don’t under estimate me as a cheap and cheerful” shiraz.  A mid palate spicy plum influence along with the dark cherries that continue to impress, provide for a richer wine than the colour presents to the eye.  Be prepared to be impressed with the quality and price.

2016 Moores Hill Riesling

I read an article today that used the word ‘leitmotif’.   Sorry, but you should highlight it, right click and google search it because it is the perfect word when it comes to Tasmanian riesling.  This wine is one of the pillars that holds up the mantle that showcases how good the island state makes this variety.

Such a lovely floral nose that just drags you in to taste it.  As you’d expect it’s lively, fresh, full of life and literally singing in the glass.  The acid is such that it grabs the fruit and carries it along the palate very slowly and doesn’t seem to want to let go.  You’ll find yourself keeping it in your mouth, not wanting to swallow it.  A refreshingly zingy wine that will excite the discerning riesling drinker.

2015 Sew and Sew Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir

I’ll be the first to admit to being bias when it comes to Pinot Noir.  I’m usually Tassie through and through but there’s always going to be something else that comes along which causes me to have an attitude adjustment.  That’s a good thing.

Hello Sew and Sew Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir.

Great presentation straight up.  Run your fingers over the label.  I’ll say nothing else because it is bound to get you intrigued.

Red fruits are singing on the nose so much so you have to wonder if they are drowning out something else that wants to have an influence on your olfactory senses.

The red fruits want to dominate the palate yet again but plums show their presence on the mid palate and cherries ask not to be forgotten with their, albeit, gentle influence.  It’s definitely varietal.  It’s definitely pinot noir.  It’s definitely a good, good, good wine.  It’s definitely worth seeking out.

It is these sorts of wines that give me a new respect for Adelaide Hills pinot noir and I thank Jodie Armstrong for that.
