2016 Yelland & Papps Pinot Blanc

Up front, I’m going to admit the name, Pinot Blanc, did not excite me.  I’m guessing for the everyday punter it would be the same.  Engage the ‘reconsider’ section of your brain…please, because the label is an excellent source of information about the variety.

If there is one bit of advice I can give, don’t serve it too cold.  There’s always that one person who says “Why?” so, the answer is, because it killed everything this wine had to offer.

On the nose it presented like another white wine that starts with the word ‘Pinot’.  Apples, pears (and floral) aromas which then appeared again on the palate with a touch of stone fruit to finish it off very nicely if a tad short.  As strange as it sounds, this wine actually opened up even better the longer it was in the glass.  The down side, it didn’t stay in the glass long enough very often.

I have to also admit, it was an easy wine to like…in a good way.  One that you can open, pour, sit back, relax and enjoy on a sunny afternoon over lunch…with cheese or with salt & pepper & chilli squid or simply on its own.  Don’t be shy, tuck in!

2016 Irvine Pinot Gris

Let’s kick off this tasting note with a confession.  I like Pinot Gris.  I have to add though, it has to be quality Pinot Gris.  This isn’t just quality, it’s classy and definitely one I like.

I’ll give you a little heads up.  There is not a hair out of place with this gem.

It looks clean, pristine and dressed to impress.  Pears kick it off on the nose then peaches coupled with pear skins bring it down softly onto the palate where it makes it presence felt. Rich, textural with a lovely mouth feel, it finishes a touch dry but is as smooth as silk and has impressive length to it too. This is also a terrific food wine.

Summer is just around the corner.  Find it, buy it, serve it up.  Your friends will love you for it.  At only $22, how could you not!!

2015 Yelland & Papps Shiraz

This wine gets off to a flying start.  A lovely concoction of berries on the nose and they are incredibly fresh and aromatic.

The juicy dark fruits have some pretty impressive class to them I have to say.  It could be thanks to some mid palate plums but, you know what, there is slight cool climate influence to this wine.  Spice/savouriness/pepperiness are most complimentary to the lush fruit characteristics that seem to soak it up perfectly.

All the facets of this wine work together beautifully resulting in a lingering smile on your face as you drink it.  What a wine for the price!  Yes please.

2012 Redman Coonawarra Shiraz

I’ve mentioned before about how Cabernet seems to get all the attention when it comes to the Coonawarra wine region. Shiraz is definitely the poor cousin.

It will surprise many to know that the grapes for this wine came from vines that are about 40 years old. Yep, and that’s something that even surprised me!

This is all about generosity, grace and elegance. No two ways about it.

There’s a nice mix of red and (mainly) dark berries but then it becomes so soft and smooth and silky and scrumptious. The finish is a bit dryish but the generous amount of fruit fixes that and it doesn’t detract from the wine that is wrapped in a ridiculously cheap $20 package.

I thoroughly enjoyed this wine and it pains me to admit to not having any. At $20 a bottle it’s not going to be difficult to remedy that situation.

2014 Grey Sands Pinot Gris

There are pinot gris’ and then there is Grey Sands Pinot Gris.

I can’t remember where I heard it but, I was told Pinot Gris is the red drinkers white.  The reason for this was because of the richness, mouthfeel and alcohol level of the wine.  This fits the bill but without that alcohol level.

What I would also like to point out is, I served this, with a couple of other wines, to a couple of mates of mine who, to say the least, know their wine, but didn’t tell them anything about any of the wines.  Their response, “that is quality wine”, “my pick of the wines this afternoon.”  When I revealed the wine, they were not surprised.  Honestly.

My opinion only of course but don’t expect the usual ‘pear’ characteristics with this Gris. They’ve been left on the bench.  It’s very aromatic but softly so.  This may not make sense but you’ll understand when you smell it.  The palate is where it wants to tell you it’s all quality with some humility but it shouldn’t be so.  It should shout about it’s star quality. Full bodied but unobtrusive, rich flavours but so approachable and balanced.  Another great Pinot Gris from Bob & Rita.

2016 LiNO RaMBLe Vinyl Shiraz

Let’s be honest.  When you see ‘2016’ on a wine label you immediately think white wine and possibly rosé being in the bottle.  Not Shiraz.

When I saw this I went looking for the permission slip from it’s parents!  But I soon changed my view when I cracked the screw cap.

This is so obviously young it was always going to be difficult to hide that fact.  But, and a big but it is, this is so very well made you can’t help but understand it being let loose into the wide wine world already.

Incredibly deep colour and the aromas are uncompromising.  There’s no option, you just have to love them. The fruit is bea-utiful!! Buckets full of dark cherries and choc coated blackberries combine to give you a palate that is alive and kicking!! You have to wonder how they do it for the cash!

This is a truly delicious wine that is built for the ‘now’ but has enough in it to allow you to be patient for another 5 years or so.  Patience my friend, patience.

2014 Teusner ‘Big Jim’ Shiraz

You just have to look at the photo on the bottle and you know ‘Big Jim’ will be a cocky bugger. Chest out, a degree of confidence in his stride and a not-to-be-messed-with attitude.  Can’t help but love it.

Okay, don’t say I didn’t warn you.  This is one super dooper, full on, mighty impressive rooster but not at all someone to be scared of.

Black as the ace of spades in the glass but it’s a shiny, polished black that impresses immediately.  The nose gives you black fruits and spicy dark cherries.

The palate.  Taste it.  You’ll take a couple of steps back.  Lovely concentrated dark fruit characters show themselves again…and again…and again plus some plummy notes filling out the lush mouthfeel this wine has.

I repeat.  Can’t help but love it.

2015 Hentley Farm Poppy Field Blend

My late Nan use to call something that was a mix of allsorts a ‘Heinz Variety’ but you knew it was an endearing term because she’d say it with a smile.  She liked whatever it was.

Considering it has 43% Eden Valley Riesling, 21% Eden Valley Chardonnay, 19% Eden Valley White Frontignac, 9% Barossa Valley Viognier and 8% Adelaide Hills Pinot Gris it fits into the ‘Heinz Variety’ definition.

The Riesling component is the standout.  Lime, citrus and honey blossom aromas tell you that but just wait until you taste this.  There is plenty going on let me tell you.  Put those aromas with apricot, pear and a touch of sweetness (thanks to the frontignac) on the palate and you have a beautifully balanced blend.  The very soft acid coupled with that touch of sweetness gives it a lovely, long finish too.  If I had to find one fault (and it’s not really a fault) with it, it doesn’t come in a magnum.  It is that easy to drink!

2016 LiNO RaMBle Ludo Fiano

Straight off the bat, I’m going to say, it is so easy to say how a wine has texture, richness and viscosity and with this wine it’s backed up with substance & truth.  Andy & Angela have nailed it with this wine, that’s for sure.

Strangely enough the vines for this wine have an average age of 2 years.  Yep, 2 years.  But with some deft treatment by the team, including some of the juice being put into barrel, this has come out on the other side shining.

Lots (and I mean plenty) of flavour that seems to hang around for the attention it definitely deserves.  My palate soaked it all in and could not ignore its presence and nor could the others in the room.

A terrific example of this variety that needs to be experienced to be appreciated.  Nice work from the LiNO RaMBLe team.  Very nice work indeed.

2015 Hentley Farm The Rogue Field Blend

If you have the time to look up the term ‘Rogue’ you will realise this wine is not really roguish.

Okay, so it doesn’t tell you what the blend is on the bottle making it a little intriguing but that’s about the extent of it’s roguishness.  However, if you go into the Hentley Farm website it will tell you it is a delightful concoction of 45% Grenache, 18% Mataro, 15% Shiraz, 12% Zinfandel and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The colour of this wine is truly amazing.  Considering the high percentage of Grenache it is incredibly deep and dark but hold it up to the light and it has this beautiful translucent garnet colour.

Stick your nose in the glass, and hello grenache characteristics!  Raspberries and cherries contribute the most to the vibrant aromas.  Add these to the spicy/savouriness on the palate and you have yourself one luscious, juicy and lip-smacking blend that keeps you going back for more…and we did!!
