2024 Castle Rock Estate ‘Diletti’ Pinot Noir

I was listening to an interview with well-known film critic, David Stratton. In his formative years, he often went to the cinema with his grandmother. Back then, movies played on a continuous loop. They’d buy tickets and often arrive with only the last 10 or 15 minutes of the film remaining. They’d watch the ending first, then stay to see the movie from the beginning.

At first, I thought that was quite odd. But then it struck me. Knowing the ending didn’t spoil the experience for him. Instead, it deepened it. I wonder if, having seen how it ended, did his attention shift to the building of the story, how the characters connected with the story, how the influences on the characters shaped the outcome. The idea really stuck with me.

In many ways, wine is like that. You pour a glass and taste it. A sensory moment of the final scene of a story. One that begins in the vineyard, passes through the transformation in the winery, and finally, the ending here, in a glass, in your hand.

The aromas make a lovely first impression with a lifted notes of cherry, strawberry, blackcurrant and a just a touch of herbs and spice. On the palate, juicy red berries and dark cherries lead the flavourful profile while a hint of white pepper (just), delicately played oak, a little spice-like touch, fine tannins and silky texture add to the long, elegant finish. This is a beautifully balanced, complex and elegant Pinot Noir. Like a good movie, it would be worth experiencing twice. Once for the pleasure of trying it, and again to appreciate and admire how it was made.
